Career & History

April's formation was first announced by DSP Media on February 9, 2015. They debuted on August 24 with the EP Dreaming.

On November 9, 2015 the group's leader, Somin, announced her departure from the group.

On October 29, 2016 Hyunjoo announced her official departure from April, following a seven-month hiatus, in order to pursue an acting career.

On November 11th, 2016 DSP confirmed Chaekyung would join the group along with another new member, Rachel.

On February 28, 2021, a post was made to an online forum by someone claiming to be former member Hyunjoo's brother. In the post, he claimed that Hyunjoo's departure from the group had not been because she wanted to study acting, but because she had been forced out due to being severely bullied by the other members, to the point of trying to take her own life. DSP Media released a statement denying that any bullying took place, and announced they would be pursuing legal action against Hyunjoo and her family. As a result, April has faced heavy backlash, up to and including having members removed from endorsement deals and acting roles. Hyunjoo later posted a statement on her personal instagram on the April 18, 2021 backing the claims made by the two netizens which had made the accusations. She also stated that the label, DSP Media, was not allowing her to terminate her exclusive contract with them.

On June 22, 2021 four of the April members, Chaewon, Naeun, Yena, and Jinsol held an exclusive interview with Sports Kyunghyang to speak up on the situation. In this interview, they stated that they were actually the victims. They addressed all the accusations stating that they were all misunderstandings and that Hyunjoo was rarely at the dorms per her request. They stated that they were all afraid of her due to her personality and spurts of anger.

Both sides have publicly shared their evidence. However, the case is still ongoing and neither side has been officially proven or declared accurate.

It was assumed due to this scandal and the public backlash, April would likely disband.

On January 28, 2022, DSP Media released and official statement stating that April would be officially disbanding. It is not certain the path of the members as RBW Entertainment acquired DSP Media earlier in the week and no information has been announced if the members are signing with RBW or going a different path.
